No Man’s Sky – love it, hate it…it doesn’t matter it exists and will continue to do so. I personally was all over the NMS hype. More so for the technology, I mean, a game that large and it’s only a 3GB download?! Gotta love math. What are the possibilities if other developers starting playing around with this? Of course, once it landed all it’s flaws came to the surface real quick. The obvious one – what the hell do you do in this game? Who knew searching for the center of the universe could get so tedious. I still pop the game on and pluck away at the journey but it has lost it’s shine.
Now, Super Mario Bros. will never lose it’s shine. It shall live on forever and continue to touch the hearts of millions for as long as we have electricity. What do these two have in common? Nothing…well, until No Mario’s Sky came along by Australian developers ASMB Games. The game was developed in 72 hours as part of the Ludum Dare game jam. I didn’t get a chance to play but you can still checkout screenshots and video on their site. From the release notes No Mario’s Sky “featured 1000s of Goombas, An Infinite Universe, Muscle Toad, ‘Original’ Music, ‘Faithful’ Physics, Social Commentary about Interplanetary Colonialism, and a Radical Space Ship.” Sounds awesome and looked pretty great. It was great until Nintendo slapped them with a DMCA takedown. Sad face indeed.
Gotta love the DMCA takedown. As annoying as it can be it has it’s moments of importance and I understand brand protection. I’m actually surprised this couldn’t be filed under parody. But I’m no lawyer (although I have plenty of lawyer friends who could probably shine some light on it for me). With the DMCA takedown in order ASMB didn’t give up entirely but instead built DMCA Sky – well played, sirs. The updated description now reads: “Help Spaceman Finn search for Princess Mango in an infinite universe (that may contain no Mangoes). Featuring crazy Moombas, An Infinite Universe, Muscle, Amazing Physics and a Radical Space Ship; DMCA’s Sky is the hackneyed remake-gone-mashup you’ve been craving.” Hopefully they don’t mean Finn from another galaxy because those guys are known for the DMCA takedown.
