Not bad. Goes to show what you can do with some ambition and $700. I actually thought the opening was really well done. It set a cool tone and lead in with decent effects to the main battle. I don’t have much else to say other than it’s pretty cool and impressive….and it’s Mega Man related. Below is an except from the YouTube page description:

“The beginning part of the video is a message Dr.Light records over 100 years ago, his lab is now abandoned. As the camera moves into the capsule you see a still running testing parameter where Mega Man X fights a hologram or drone in the form of Protoman. The reason I chose to use Protoman, was for the mystery surrounding him it’s never officially said what happens to him. So after this test ends with a charged blast from X he faces a choice to kill but he chooses to show mercy, After which a hologram appears telling him that his testing is done. What isn’t seen is who brought him out of the capsule which of course is Dr.Cain, maybe for another time.

This isn’t a perfect video I understand this, this is all independently made I didn’t have a lot of money but I decided to do it anyway I had 700 dollars, two green sheets, an amazing prop maker, two actors who worked for free because I didn’t have enough money to pay them, they still gave 110% and one awesome friend who busted his butt on the animation side.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and for your support. I HOPE!!!! I did this game justice! “

I feel silly posting this now since this has been around for apparently a year. But, as people say when they’re running late for something and need a cliche excuse: better late than never. Gurk, a port from J2ME by the fellas at Larva Labs, is an 8bit RPG for Android. It tells a classic tale of three adventurers (a knight, an archer and a wizard of course) who…um…adventure around ‘gaining experience and equipment while seeking out the villainous Braka, an ancient red dragon.’ And for the history lesson – ‘the original game was developed for the Nokia Series 30 handsets.’ That’s all the history I have. To be honest I haven’t tried it out yet which is dumb since this Android version sizes in at about 100k. But I do know someone who has…who showed it to me…which in turn inspired this post. He says it’s pretty awesome. So there you have it. Now get over to the Android Market and do what’s right. For not much more info head over to the original LarvaLabs post. [Thanks Rob L.]

It’s true. It has over 100 pixels. If you’re tired of your standard MMO’s where you run around as elves, warlocks or some cat-bird-human hybrid with level 34 anti-social skills then 8BitMMO might be up your alley. 8BitMMO is a (free) 2D 8bit construction sandbox where you can build whatever you like either solo or with other players. And to keep things interesting it has player vs player or player vs environment type quests. Really it has everything your 8bit heart desires. It’s a constant work in progress but is currently playable. Java based, 8BitMMO runs on Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. Head over to the official site, 8bitmmo.net, for a trailer and more info.

This might be my new anthem. I have no idea what a Cubie is. But I do know what Oktoberfest is and this combination of ridiculousness is just catchy enough to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Some classic 8-bit references in here too which make it that much greater. If you speak German you can head over to the cubie site and figure out what the hell a Cubie is and what they’re doing at Oktoberfest. For all our German readers (which is huge by the way) Oktoberfest starts September 17th…but of course you already knew that. Prost!

As kind of a hobby I follow a few advertising blogs. I’m not an advertising guru by any means but definitely have a fascination and appreciation for the process (even for the completely annoying ads). I’ve always been intrigued by the psychology behind it, the creativeness and at times humor that can be generated by a simple ad. As in this IKEA ad where they tied a classic video game visual with a slogan to portray a concept that IKEA furniture can ‘accomplish.’ It’s simple and gets the point across. Plus, you’ll definitely create more space once that block drops and you blow out the bottom drawers. [Ads of the World]

This is an interesting re-imagining of the classic Super Mario Bros. as a first-person title. Guess it could be a FPS with fireballs but we’ll leave that alone. This 3D video was made by the same guys who brought us Jedi A-holes – check out more videos on freddiew’s youtube channel. It took aproximately 60 man hours to create using 3dsMax, FumeFX, and After Effects. Enjoy.
