This might be my new anthem. I have no idea what a Cubie is. But I do know what Oktoberfest is and this combination of ridiculousness is just catchy enough to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Some classic 8-bit references in here too which make it that much greater. If you speak German you can head over to the cubie site and figure out what the hell a Cubie is and what they’re doing at Oktoberfest. For all our German readers (which is huge by the way) Oktoberfest starts September 17th…but of course you already knew that. Prost!

How do you get all those goombas to join the fight against two Italian plumbers? Simple. As kind of a hobby I follow a few advertising blogs. I’m not an advertising guru by any means but definitely have a fascination and appreciation for the process (even for the completely annoying ads). I’ve always been intrigued by the psychology behind it, the creativeness and at times humor that can be generated by a simple ad. As in this IKEA ad where they tied a classic video game visual with a slogan to portray a concept that IKEA furniture can ‘accomplish.’ It’s simple and gets the point across. Plus, you’ll definitely create more space once that block drops and you blow out the bottom drawers. [Ads of the World]

This is one of those mods that is cool in that ‘oh-that’s-neat’ kinda way but is completely useless. I still don’t understand why people mod old Nintendos to do pointless things – I’m still on the bandwagon of just make them work consistently. Then I’ll be impressed. But if you’re so inclined to do this you can get step-by-step instructions here, but please, for love of Google, make sure the tetris and NES are already broken. Every time I see these types of mods I cringe and a platypus somewhere on this planet dies. Just remember that. [engadget]

This might be the coolest 8bit news in awhile. NEStalgia is an original, and free to play, MORPG that combines the classic 8bit RPG feel with an online community. Pretty awesome. Check out the trailer video first then head over to the official site to download.  [joystiq]

The Mario continues…this time with real world sound effects. Amazing how it changes the feel of such a simple game. This was put together by Jake Kaufman, a sound designer from LA, using sound effect libraries for games.

This is an interesting re-imagining of the classic Super Mario Bros. as a first-person title. Guess it could be a FPS with fireballs but we’ll leave that alone. This 3D video was made by the same guys who brought us Jedi A-holes – check out more videos on freddiew’s youtube channel. It took aproximately 60 man hours to create using 3dsMax, FumeFX, and After Effects. Enjoy.

If it can be 8bitted – make it so. Well this homemade beauty was built as apart of an art experiment called an instrument a day, where artist Ranjit Bhatnager builds a new homemade instrument…um…each day. Today seems to be our lucky day as he decided to take on making an 8bit violin that actually works.   This awesome exploration of music and 8bit is made from maple and oak craft wood and 90 degree angles except for the fingerboard. Not much to say. You either read it and know it or have no idea what this is. Either way it’s a pretty fun side scrolling 8bit version of the epic story that will ruin your day.
